GRAB YOUR THINKING CAP How hard is it to say no to requests and demands at work because you feel guilty or fear you will? Why else don’t you say no more often?

You think you have to do everything yourself

If you don’t have a cape stitched to your clavicles, you’re not Superwoman, so why insist on doing everything at work yourself? What’s wrong with sharing the load, delegating, giving someone else a chance to learn what you know? What’s wrong is that doing so causes you to feel so anxious that you tell yourself you can’t bear it. Somewhere along the way (in your family growing up, actually), you learned that you can’t depend on other people and must do everything yourself if you want the job done or done right.

You’d secretly love to get help but are petrified to give up control because you believe all hell will break loose. Okay, maybe your parents weren’t always on top of things, but that was then and this is now. Think about it: Are your employees, supervisees, or colleagues really such nitwits that you can’t trust them to do their jobs? Aren’t there at least a couple of them who can walk and chew gum at the same time? You need to assess your situation rationally, particularly who has what skills and whether there’s a reality-based, concrete reason to do everything yourself. More likely, your fears are getting in the way of striking a balance between holding on to control and letting it go.

The worst thing that can happen when you delegate or cede control is that someone doesn’t do a great job or the same job that you would. In your head, you might imagine catastrophe, but it’s unlikely that you’re surrounded by total nincompoops. If you are, then you don’t belong where you’re working. No one should remain in a job in which she is truly the only one capable of making wise decisions and getting things done. It’s a setup for your stressometer (and your blood pressure) to soar off the charts. It’s also a setup for you to feed your face.
